Organic & Biodynamic

WHY BIODYNAMIC?

At Beaver Creek vineyards, we consider ourselves stewards of the land, with a profound responsibility to pass along a clean environment and revitalized, healthy soil to future generations. Biodynamic farming is holistic land stewardship at its best. It is the highest paradigm of sustainable farming, offering one of the smallest carbon footprints of any agricultural method. We maintain a minimal impact on the environment and our natural surroundings.

Organic farming feeds the soil, enriching the diversity and vitality of microorganisms and thereby improving the health of the vines and complexity of grape flavor. We forego the use of inorganic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides at Beaver Creek Vineyards. Instead, we rely on practices such as composting to increase the activity of microorganisms in the soil and planting cover crops that control erosion and provide habitat and food for beneficial insects as well as green manure for the vines. As a result, our soils and vines - as well as our walnut orchard, vegetable garden are naturally healthy and more resistant to disease and climate changes.

We also embrace the biodynamic approach to agriculture, a set of principles first described by Austrian scientist Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s. Biodynamic agriculture views the farm as a selfcontained, self-sustaining ecosystem responsible for creating and maintaining its individual health and vitality without any external or unnatural additions. In practice, soil, plants, animals and humans together create this image of a holistic organism. Biodynamics prescribes using the rhythms of nature - the sun, moon, planets and stars - to guide the timing of farming practices as a means of ensuring the health, vigor and vitality of the crop being grown. Many Biodynamic farmers refer to the astronomical calendar when planning activities such as pruning, cultivating, harvesting and spraying the preparation. The balance and harmony afforded by biodynamics enable the vines to fully express their innate qualities and likewise, enhance the wines' ability to reflect the unique character that emanates this vineyard.

In the cellar, our winemaking is precise and stripped of pretension, our approach purposeful, uncompromising, natural, and honest. We respect what each vintage gives us, and the authenticity of the story that each growing season tells. Our wines are original, and we strive to produce a product of the cleanest, purest quality. The fragrance and taste of our wine comes only from the elements of nature. We use native yeast, none or the absolute minimum amount of sulfites, so people sensitive to sulfites are usually not affected by our wine. Wines from our vineyard consistently carry the stamp of depth and balance that has characterized wines from this land since 2007. They will speak the purity and intention, in the clear voice of their singular terroir.

Please join us in promoting unity and balance between nature and humanity - from our vineyard to your table!
